Oi Yuk Chu Yee

November 1, 1933 – May 12, 2025
Oi Yuk Chu Yee, 91 of Brookline, passed away peacefully in the early morning of May 12,
2025 at South Cove Manor Rehabilitation Center at Quincy Point surrounded by her
loving family.
Oi Yuk was born on November 1, 1933, in Burma but came to China when she was a
little girl. While still in school, Oi Yuk was matched with her future husband Gen Yuen
Yee and married years later. They escaped to Hong Kong during the Japanese invasion.
In 1968, she immigrated to the US with 7 children in tow since her husband left Hong
Kong to the US a few months earlier.
While in the US, Oi Yuk worked as a seamstress in a garment factory. Because of her
friendly nature and eagerness to help others, she was well-like by her co-workers and
had developed many long lasting friendships. After the factory closed, she worked
alongside with her husband Gen Yuen in their Chinese Restaurant. It is during this time
that she perfected her children’s favorite dishes such as saifun with dried shrimp, fried
fish cakes and shrimp dumplings.
Oi Yuk was a loving mother and liked to indulge her children while her husband was a
strict but fair father. Both parents instilled positive values in their children and
emphasized the importance of education, hard work and helping others. She stayed late
at night with her many children and encouraged them while they were doing their
schoolwork. Although Oi Yuk was taught English in school, she claims to have forgotten
everything. When her children are speaking in English in front of her, she seems to
understand what is being said to our surprise.
Even though Oi Yuk was a tiny woman at 4 ft 11 inches, she will always be remembered
by her loud booming voice, her vibrant personality, her sweet and gracious manner to
everyone that she encountered. The family would tease Mom that she didn’t need to
use the telephone to talk to her friends in the next town over. She should just open the
windows and holler. Even with her last ounce of strength in the nursing home, she
acknowledges her visitors with a little smile and wave goodbye with her two hands.
She will be deeply missed by all who have the pleasure of meeting her. She was the
beloved mother of the late Steve and his widow Forra; Philip and his wife Annie, Lai Ha
and her husband Richard Leung; Lai Kuen and her husband David Chou; Greg; Lai Ngor;
Lai Wan and her husband Dominic Kwok; the late Lyla and Matthew Goldstein. She was
the cherished Grandma of 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
