Mar K Wong lived an extraordinary life that spanned a century of change and challenge. She
was born in the village of Baksa, Canton, China, and passed away peacefully just nine days
before her 100th birthday.
At the age of 21, her father arranged her marriage to Loy Wing Wong, a U.S. citizen originally
from a neighboring village. Upon arrival in California, the couple stayed briefly with her father,
Ben, before Loy Wing traveled east to Boston to find work and a place to live. Several weeks
later, and speaking very little English, Mar K courageously boarded a train alone for Boston—an
experience she would always remember as one of her proudest accomplishments.
The family eventually settled in Clinton, Massachusetts, where they purchased a laundry
business. They became the first Chinese family in the predominantly Irish town and raised six
children above the shop. To help support the family, Mar K also dried duck, salted duck eggs,
and made rice wine. She managed the laundry during times when her husband worked in
manufacturing, operated the Fung Wong restaurant with relatives, and after his passing in
1988.
Throughout her life, Mar K was known for her warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit. She loved
to cook, garden, play games, and spend time with friends and family. Her Mah Jong games
often lasted through the night, and she enjoyed playing Blackjack with loved ones well into her
90s.
She also cherished travel, visiting China, Hong Kong, Canada, and California to see relatives.
Mar K will be remembered for her strength, resilience, work ethic, and her exceptional cooking.
She leaves behind a legacy of love—instilling in her children the importance of family,
togetherness, and the joy of sharing meals.
