Obituary of Miu Yin Chin

Please share a memory of Miu Yin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Miu Yin Chin, age 95, of Brighton, MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 10, 2024.

Born in Toisan, Guangdong, China, Miu Yin came to Boston in 1966 with baby daughter in tow to join her husband, who had come to the United States in 1952 with hopes and dreams for a brighter future. While raising two children in those early years, she worked tirelessly as a seamstress—sewing together not just fabric, but also the pieces of a close-knit family and a community of lifelong friends.

She kept sewing, often handmaking garments for her children, and later grandchildren. After retiring, she and her husband traveled to places they had dreamed about, and went for daily walks along the Charles River with their friends. But most important to them was spending time with their precious grandchildren, watching them grow up and instilling a love of learning and integrity. “Always do the right thing.”

Miu was also an avid gardener, with a talent for growing giant chayotes, which were so abundant every year that friends would ask her to save and share her prized chayote seeds with them for the next growing season. She also delighted in making her extra special “ha-gows” and “doong” for family and friends, at their request. Even stopping mid-dinner once to make peanut-sesame “energy balls” for her daughter’s friend when she heard she was driving to North Carolina non-stop. “This will keep you full on the road,” she told her. She was spontaneous and caring like that.

Her life was a testament to hard work and perseverance. She spoke her mind with a clear and fearless voice.

Despite becoming disabled from a life-altering stroke, she never gave up and continued to show her strength and resilience, remarkably soldiering on for 19 years and living life to the fullest.

Miu Yin is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Wei Ning (George) Chin, and is survived by her beloved daughter, Pauline Chin and husband Steven Lee; and son John Chin and wife Terry Ung and their children, her grandchildren, Ariel, Randy, Jessica, and Erica, whose lives she touched deeply with her wisdom and affection. She is also survived by her brother, Allen Tam and his family, with whom she shared many cherished memories; and also her extended family.

Her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Remember and celebrate Miu Yin Chin for a life well-lived, a life of meaning, courage, dedication, and quiet unwavering strength.
