Fern and Alberto please accept our condolences on your loss of your beloved mother/ mother in law.
Chiming whom I called 家姐 was my cousin. Her father was my 4th uncle ; my father was the 6th son in the family ; he followed his brother’s and worked in Cuba. Like 家姐 I was born and raised by my mom alone in Fat Shan ( 佛山). Due to my father’s late marriage 家姐 was 22 years older than me.
When I lost my parents at 10, my 8th uncle took me under his wings and brought me up in Hong Kong. Both uncle and aunt were not that familiar and connected with the schools in HK; 家姐 helped to arrange me to attend a more respectable school rather than the nearby rooftop school where I started arriving HK from Fat Shan. This paved the way for my future education.
家姐 helped me to set up a savings account ; taught me to save my pocket money and Chinese New Year 利是 for my future education.
家姐 and her late husband welcomed me to spend time at their home and treated me as their own. Since 8th uncle didn’t have children I gradually ended up staying with her family all weekends and school holidays. From them I learned to swim in sea water and enjoyed the beach（赤柱）; the proper western dining plus some mischievous endeavors such as pulling air plugs from car tires or throwing ice cubes at street passengers and worst of all putting bitter fish gall bladder in the tea for one of the family friends.
Even though 8th uncle was the driving force for my higher education in US 家姐 helped paving the way. She advised me on necessary documents; helped procuring air tickets and made all arrangements for the journey. She even chaperoned me all the way from HK to New York City in June 1970.
After my children finished college I had more free time and tried visiting her every year. She enjoyed staying in 2Life Community; while lived independently but still close to her daughter who kept a watchful eye on her. I love and treasure every moment of those annual visits..
It’s sad to see her health spiraled down with the pandemic lock down.
家姐 you are a devoted wife, an indulgent loving mother, on top, a compassionate woman. You are not only my cousin but my best friend and confidant. I respect and love you.I will miss you and remember you the rest of my life.
Have a good rest and embrace your new life.
